Patric Chan on Niche Marketing
Oct 12th, 2007 by Martin Lee
The next speaker of the day was Patric Chan from Malaysia. Patric is an ‘A’ level holder whose first job was selling greeting cards door to door. His dad worked as a taxi driver and his mum was a housewife.
Patric’s session was on niche marketing 2.0. Some newbies have the perception that when you are told to focus on a niche market, you need to find a product to sell to that niche market. Patric explains that niche marketing is not all about a product. Sites like www.ehow.com, www.wikipedia.com and answers.yahoo.com can be used to find niche markets.
How to Make Money from Niche Markets
- Build your own affiliate program to promote your info product or physical products.
- Using an autoresponder to build a mailing list and promote affiliate programs.
- Make money from Google Adsense.
- Create a monthly membership site access to your inner circle.
- And many more ways.
New Strategies
1) Use pull marketing strategy instead of push marketing.
- Blog with RSS feed.
- Free podcast subscription.
- Press release or content with RSS syndication.
- Focus on content rather than trying to outsmart the market.
- Create content that can have 2-way easy communication.
2) To build a strong relationship with your prospects and customers as one entity instead of two.
- Allowing them to have the latest “insider information”.
3) Separating yourself as the ultimate authority in your niche market.
- Website/blog
- Mailing list
- Product
- Joint Venture Partners
- YOU
- Be the leader by having first-hand content before others become a mentor.
- Social proof
- Are you having a conversation with them?
The Rise of the Long Tail - What is a Long Tail Niche?
Finding diamonds in the rough vertically and from the uncommon interest of individuals. Then expand it horizontally for market domination.
The Three Factors of Niche Marketing 2.0
1) Creating your own space in the long tail horizontally.
- Isolating yourself not to be labeled as another website or product.
- Investing into several long tail markets to be the main one and you’ll have dominated a niche market.
- Why would they pay you? Solve their current problem. Adding convenience to what they are doing right now.
- Providing entertainment by giving the emotion they are seeking.
- Feeding their other wants (sense of belonging, ego, etc).
2) Thinking long tail in all of your marketing aspect.
- Think of what other methods of market reachability that are not being used yet.
- The long tail language
3) Strategizing cross-endorsements with other long tail sites/marketers
- Exposing yourself in two different niche. Eg Baby food and parenting.
- Approach competitors. Be part of their business.
On the internet where everything is becoming more competitive, I feel that most newbies wanting to start an online business would have the highest chance of success if they focus on a niche market. Go into niches where they can dominate or at least have a substantial market share.
The last thing a newbie wants to do is to start a website teaching people “how to make money on the internet”. It is very hard to succeed in that area as it is an area where all the expert internet marketers are.
