Optimizing Google Adwords With Google Analytics
Dec 26th, 2007 by Martin Lee
In this video, Stephanie Hsu from Google shares with us how we can make use of Google Analytics to optimize our Adwords campaigns. Upon integration, it is possible to gain useful insights from the many reports available.
First of all, different users would probably be interested in different metrics. For example, an ecommerce would be interested in the funnel process and conversion rates. A lead generation site would be interested in the conversion. A news site might be more interested in the duration of visit.
You should first identify the metrics that are important to you and then customise them to show on your Analytics default control panel. As an affiliate marketer, since I don’t have access to the conversion rates, I usually use the bounce rate or the average time on site as a proxy to the quality of traffic that I’m attracting.
The basic approach would be to measure the metrics that you are getting for all your different keywords. Based on the results, you can junk or reduce the bids for non-performing keywords and increase the bids for performing ones.
Another useful report that you can analyse is the keyword position report. Using that report, you can measure the metrics that you are getting for the various adwords positions. This allows you to determine the optimal keyword location for your adwords bidding.
Other important parameters you can compare include traffic location and time.
Overall, this is a good educational video to orientate the new or even intermediate user to using Analytics with Adwords. Doing so allows you to truly track, measure and improve your performance.
