Next Best Way to Track Conversions
Oct 10th, 2007 by Martin Lee
An owner of an ecommerce site will be able to track which traffic source is producing the best traffic for him by using the conversion rate. For the affiliate who is unable to track the conversion rate, this might pose a problem. Lucikly, there is one metric that can help both the ecommerce site owner and the affiliate greatly.
This metric is called the bounce rate.
A bounce rate tells you the percentage of visitors to your site who exit without viewing another page. This is very powerful. If you have a content site with traffic (both paid and unpaid) coming from many sources, you can track which traffic source is better for you by looking at the bounce rate.
You can then eliminate paid traffic sources that are giving you very high bounce rate. Other than conversions, this is the next best thing you can use to determine the quality of your traffic.
Another thing you can do is to look at your top entry pages, and tweak to improve those that have a high bounce rate.
The typical industry average for bounce rate is about 40-60%.
