Frustrations With Google Adwords
Mar 3rd, 2008 by Martin Lee
This afternoon, I had a frustrating 30 minutes with a staff from the Google Adwords helpdesk. I contact Adwords because I had a website that had been penalised with a low quality score by Google. Thus, it was almost impossible for any of my Google Adwords advertisements to show for that website.
The reason why it had a low quality score was that the website was previously just a one page website with an opt-in box. After I had read and implemented the recommendations provided by Google, the quality score didn’t seem to change so I contacted Google.
Unfortunately, the live chat operator at the other end couldn’t seem to help. All the person could tell me is “You need to optimize your keywords” and “You need to optimize your landing page“. I asked for specifics but none was given.
How am I going to optimize a campaign with only 3 keywords when ten other advertisers seem to have no problems bidding on that same keyword? It is really frustrating when you see lousier sites able to appear on the first paid position on Google Adwords while there seems to be no way to make your own appear.
As it is now, the keywords and website that I’m bidding for are highly relevant. Isn’t that what Google wants? I’m not too sure what else I could do.
Well, if Google does not want to earn more of my money, so be it.
I have just opened a Microsoft Adcenter account after putting it off for many months. Thanks to Google for providing the kick I need.

Hey Martin
Sorry to hear about the Google Slap. I believe that there are a number of articles out there on this topic. I seem to recall reading up on one but can’t remember where now. When I find it I’ll let you know.
Meanwhile do you have a copy of Perry Marshall’s Guide to Google Adwords? Maybe you should get one.
Philip.
Hi Philip,
Yah, I have the book by Perry.
Actually, the historical record of that campaign has more or less condemned it…very difficult to optimise now. I was trying to see whether anyone over at Google could do a manual over-ride for me.
while adwords is good for marketing sometimes, i still prefer to do it the free ways , the usual and common online marketing strategies such as article marketing.. gives me quite good results too.. the key is action :D
Hi Donald,
If you can make $x with one method, why restrict yourself to only that?
2 methods might bring you $2x.
3 methods $3x.
And so on.
thanks for your inputs martin. :)
usually i will adopt a variety of traffic techniques.. then monitor my results to see the best traffic strategies and then i will focus on those that gives me the best results
